Google will be offering free advice and coaching to Skipton Market Traders on digital skills to help grow their business, career and confidence.
It’s as new research suggests, whilst food and fashion stalls thrive among the younger generations, over half of residents in Yorkshire & Humber visit markets less than they did 5 years ago.
Markets are facing significant challenges in today’s economy.
Competition from supermarkets, shopping centres and online stores grows, and digital technologies are said to be transforming how people live, work and shop.
‘The Great British Market Revival’ study carried out by Google reveals new opportunities traders in Yorkshire and Humber to grow their reach and attract new customers with the help of digital: over half (55%) visit markets less today than they did five years ago, with a lack of digital presence cited as one of the reasons they don’t visit markets more often.
At the same time, only 16% of residents in Yorkshire & Humber visit markets ‘at least weekly’, with the average visit costing £15.72.
Ronan Harris, Managing Director Google UK, commented:
“In the digital age, a basic understanding of how the online world works is useful and when it comes to business, it’s essential. We are delighted to bring the Google Digital Garage to Richmond in Yorkshire and ensure everyone has access to free digital skills workshops and one-to-one coaching.
“We want to give market traders in Skipton the digital skills they need to make the most of new technologies to level the playing field against their competition, reach new customers beyond their local area and grow, ensuring their markets remain at the heart of the local community.”
Julian Smith, MP for Skipton and Ripon, said:
“I am delighted that the Google Digital Garage is coming to Skipton. It is a great innovation that offers small and medium sized businesses the chance to learn digital skills, tailor-made for their businesses.
I particularly welcome its focus on more rural areas like ours; it follows up on the excellent work Superfast North Yorkshire have already done to improve connectivity in our area.”
The Google Digital Garage will be at Skipton Castle, The Bailey, Skipton, BD23 1AW, from 10am-4pm.
